Estimated new cancer cases in US in 2018

It is estimated that about 1.7 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in 2018. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among males (19%), followed by lung (14%) and colorectal (9%) cancers. Among females, breast (30%), lung (13%), and colorectal (7%) cancers are the most common.

Rankings based on estimates should be interpreted with caution because they are model-based projections.

New mutation linked to ovarian cancer can be passed down through dad

A newly identified mutation, passed down through the X-chromosome, is linked to earlier onset of ovarian cancer in women and prostate cancer in father and sons

A newly identified mutation, passed down through the X-chromosome, is linked to earlier onset of ovarian cancer in women and prostate cancer in father and sons. Kunle Odunsi, Kevin H. Eng and colleagues at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York, report these findings February 15th, 2018, in PLOS Genetics.

Fig 1. X-linked model. Schema for X-linked inheritance when cancer status is specific to women (all carrier men are effectively disease censored). Two family patterns with a pair of first-degree affected women are the maternal grandmother (MGM) family and the paternal grandmother (PGM) family. Stratton's paradox implies that PGM families are more likely under X-linkage because a father must pass the variant to all of his daughters. The rates are equal if the variant is autosomal.

What means "liquid biopsy" in cancer research?

Liquid biopsy is kind of novel test done on a sample of blood to look for cancer cells from a tumor that are circulating in the blood or for pieces of DNA from tumor cells that are in the blood. A liquid biopsy may be used to help find cancer at an early stage. It may also be used to help plan treatment or to find out how well treatment is working or if cancer has come back. Being able to take multiple samples of blood over time may also help doctors understand what kind of molecular changes are taking place in a tumor. The liquid biopsy is still in the reaseach but the current available results indicates its great potential for being used in the medical practice specially detecting new cancers at very early stage an enhance the probabilities of cure and to treat relapsed cancer patients before the disease is identified by the physician and increase the chances to cure or to prolong their survival.

Chronic stress may promote resistance to lung cancer therapy

Elevated levels of chronic stress hormones, such as those produced by psychological distress, may promote resistance to drugs commonly used to treat lung cancer patients with EGFR mutations, according to new research from MD Andrerson Cancer Center. Retrospective analysis of clinical patient data suggests that beta blockers may slow or prevent the development of resistance to EGFR inhibitors.

The research, published today in Science Translational Medicine used non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines and mouse models to discover and validate the pathway by which stress hormones drive resistance to these therapies, known as EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs).

“It is generally accepted that stress is not good for cancer patients, but a cancer diagnosis as well as the necessary treatments can be quite stressful. This data indicates that stress hormones may act directly on tumor cells and promote resistance to therapy, Researchers had previously identified a connection between EGFR inhibitor resistance and the immune signaling protein IL-6, which is activated by stress hormones. Therefore, the researchers sought to investigate stress hormone signaling as an alternative mechanism driving resistance to EGFR targeted therapies.
